Head Boom Pro Racket Review

Head offers the new Boom model in a range of spec choices. This, the heaviest and most performance focused in the line up is aimed at intermediate to advanced players that want to hit big and make a statement on court.

The Boom is specifically designed to give players easy access to power. Its head is more circular than a lot of other models in the Head stable, which increases the sweet spot and gives the racket a feeling of being much larger than it actually is.

This is quite a unique design that does take a bit of getting used to, as the racket can feel a little bit weighty as it travels through the air given most of the air resistance comes from the top of the frame.

Whilst it may not sound like a big deal, the Boom can feel a bit more like an oversized racket.

Head sizes are a very important part of choosing the perfect racket, so you need to feel comfortable with the shape of the frame as well as the actual square inch size of it.

The first thing you notice about the Boom Pro is its unique colour scheme. Subtle racket designs have been very popular over the past few years, and Head is bucking the trend with the turquoise paint job.

It is not garish, but definitely stands out from the crowd and gets people asking about the racket.

The fact that the bright colour only goes as far as the bottom of the head, covering the throat and grip of the racket makes the design more tasteful, as the upper portion of the head is a sleek black.

The Boom Pro’s construction makes it somewhat of a supple racket to play with, with flexible materials used in the lower part of the frame.

This is not something too typical of powerful rackets, as the idea is to give them a higher stiffness rating which increases energy return as you contact the ball.

This means more of the power from your swing gets transferred into the ball itself, rather than causing flex in the racket.

Whilst this is a great way to ensure a racket is as powerful as possible, it often compromises the comfort and playability of the racket, making it harsh on the arm.

This is where manufacturers will use a lot of dampening technology to reduce harsh vibrations, whilst still making the racket stiff enough to deliver easy power.

With the Boom Pro, Head have gone down this route as the racket comes with a 67 stiffness rating, but have been strategic with their dampening.

Keeping the racket stiffer in the top of the frame and more supple in the yolk means you will get a solid feeling on contact and a surprising amount of power, but still have plenty of feel and comfort.

The feeling does take a bit of getting used to as it blends characteristics from powerful and control focused rackets.

There is a certain plushness to the racket which you would associate with a more underpowered frame, so when the ball then flies off the strings it can take a bit of time to dial in!

Off the ground the Boom Pro is of course a powerful racket but is also surprisingly accurate. Once you can modulate the power, you can relax and let go of your swings, knowing that the ball will still go exactly where you want it.

The 16×19 string pattern gives you enough spin to keep the ball in the court, despite the powerful nature, but this isn’t a spin machine.

The weight of the racket gives it a great deal of plough through, so if you are the type of player that likes to feel the racket pocket the ball and deliver a thumping forehand, this is a great option to try.

However, the racket doesn’t have quite as much weight behind it as some other performance oriented rackets, and this does hold it back ever so slightly.

It certainly delivers on the power front, but the stability can be a little bit lacking when you really push the frame to the max. This is only a minor point though and nothing a bit of extra lead tape couldn’t address.

On both forehands and backhands the Boom Pro felt great.

It is a solid feeling racket that hits a bit of a goldilocks zone of being powerful enough to generate depth with ease, but you have just enough spin to keep the ball in the court.

There were a number of times where I thought my ball would be flying way long but it actually dipped in at the last moment.

This gives you a sense of confidence unlike many other rackets, that you can swing freely and hit the ball hard, safe in the knowledge that it will likely find the court.

It is a remarkably comfortable racket despite its specs, and I think this is where the Boom Pro excels compared to the likes of the Babolat Pure Drive.

Volleying with the Boom Pro was a pleasant experience, but this is not the party piece of this particular racket. It felt solid on contact and was surprisingly manoeuverable, but I did feel a little disconnected from the racket at times.

Whilst it does have plenty of control, it isn’t necessarily the most feelsome racket I’ve used and feels a little bit of a blunt instrument compared to my usual Wilson Pro Staff.

After the Boom Pro performed so well from the baseline I was expecting maybe a bit too much from it up at the net.

It is easy to swing and you can definitely put swinging volleys away with confidence, but for me it was a little lacking in the feel department for a racket aimed at high level players.

The Boom Pro from Head really felt great on serve. It offers a tonne of power and decent control considering the specs.

You can swing freely and relax your arm with the Boom, as you don’t have to strain at all to hit bombs!

The plushness of the racket makes it very comfortable and forgiving on serve, so your arm won’t get too tired or strained even if you use the Boom for hours on end.

The more rounded frame design makes it easy to send the ball down with a lot of pace and the racket rewards flat serves.

The racket felt great on second serves too. I got a fair amount of spin but really felt I could go after the second deal and the racket would look after me.

I was hitting second serves almost as fast as my first serves and hardly putting any effort in at all!

The Boom Pro felt comfortable, solid and powerful on returns. You can club the ball with this racket and trust that it will still land well inside the court thanks to the open string pattern.

Blocking the ball back deep takes a bit of dialling in, but once you have found your range you can neutralise points with a flick of the wrist.

Ripping angles with this racket does take a bit more racket work than lighter versions of the Boom, however the power you can generate more than makes up for it.

The large sweet spot means you can really shorten up your backswing and focus on the placement of your returns, as the racket will do a lot of the work for you.

The racket feels reassuringly firm. Stiff enough to feel very solid and that you can trust it on contact, but comfortable enough to feel a good connection with the ball.

The Head Boom Pro is a welcome addition to the Pro lineup from the iconic brand. This power focussed racket is surprisingly comfortable but still packs a punch.

The feel of the racket is unique as you can generate such easy power thanks to the stiff construction, but there is a suppleness to the way the Boom Pro pockets the ball.

It is a great choice for an intermediate to advanced player who wants a racket that offers easy power and a plush feel.

The relatively high swing weight makes it a bit of a Thor hammer to hit with, but it is not sluggish or cumbersome at the same time.

Hit stood out on serve and also felt great off the ground.

Whilst volleys weren’t its strongest point, it still had enough control and feel to encourage coming into the net to finish points off after hitting booming approach shots.
